James Goldstone (8 June 1931 – 5 November 1999; age 68) directed the second pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", as well as the first season episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?".
In 1964, Goldstone directed "The Inheritors", the classic two-part episode of The Outer Limits which featured Steve Ihnat and Jan Shutan. It featured people whose morality and identity are called into question after an unusual encounter causes them to develop super-intelligence and telepathic powers. The similarity of the concept to the second pilot of Star Trek was undoubtedly a factor in choosing Goldstone to direct it.(citation needed • edit)
In addition to The Outer Limits, Goldstone has directed for such shows as Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Dr. Kildare, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., as well as such feature films as Winning, Brother John, Red Sky at Morning, and Rollercoaster.
He was a Dartmouth College classmate of Desilu vice president and production head Herbert F. Solow.
