Kirstie Alley (born 12 January 1951; age 57) played Saavik in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It was her first major acting role in a motion picture. She declined an invitation to reprise the role in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, appearing in several television series and films through the 1980s (including the film Loverboy in which she and Robert Picardo played husband and wife) before turning full-time to comedy and scoring a success with the Look Who's Talking films.
She is probably best known for her role as Rebecca Howe in Cheers (working with Kelsey Grammer, Bebe Neuwirth, and Paul Willson) and her later sitcom, Veronica's Closet (with Wallace Langham). She also starred in the mini-series North and South, playing the sister of Jonathan Frakes and James Read. Most recently Alley has attempted to capitalize on her much-publicized weight problems in the pseudo-reality series, Fat Actress.
Several attempts were made to bring Alley back to the role of Saavik, without success, including for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and the TNG episode "Cause and Effect".
