Mathews was a Starfleet security officer aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk. In 2266, Mathews accompanied Kirk and Christine Chapel into the underground ruins of Exo III. The android Ruk murdered him by pushing him off a precipice. (TOS: "What Are Little Girls Made Of?")

Mathews was portrayed by Vince Deadrick. His uniform bore no rank insignia, and Kirk did not address him as "ensign", making it likely that he held an enlisted rank.
