USS Akagiedit
From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference
The USS Akagi (NCC-62158) was a Federation starship in service during the late 24th century.
In 2368, the Akagi was assigned to Captain Jean-Luc Picard's task force that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. During the deployment of Picard's tachyon detection grid, the Akagi was linked with the USS Ajax and USS Hood.
During an attempt by Picard and Riker to lure the Romulans through the detection grid, Picard decided that the USS Excalibur should withdraw from the formation with feigned engine troubles, forcing the Akagi and Hornet to be repositioned. In doing so, this would open up a small gap in the detection net for the Romulans to attempt to pass through. The ploy, however, failed when the Romulans disrupted the network near the Hornet forcing it, and the rest of the fleet, to withdraw and regroup at Gamma Eridon. (TNG: "Redemption II")
During the Dominion War, the Akagi was assigned to the Ninth Fleet, operating in the Bajor sector theater.
In 2374, the ship visited Deep Space 9 along with the USS Exeter and the USS Sutherland to be resupplied. (DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited") The ship later fought in the Dominion War. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight", "What You Leave Behind")

[edit] Background
According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia this vessel was a Rigel-class (β) starship.
The Akagi was named for the Japanese carrier that served as the flagship of the Pearl Harbor strike force on December 7th, 1941. She was scuttled six months later at the Battle of Midway after receiving two fatal bomb hits. The American carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) was also heavily engaged in that action. Episode writer Ron Moore thought it fitting that in Star Trek's future, the USS Akagi would be serving alongside the USS Hornet.
The term "Akagi" translates from the original Japanese to "Red Castle," a mountain in Japan. In "You Are Cordially Invited", Kira incorrectly pronounces the ship as the "Agaki".
[edit] Apocrypha
The Price of Freedom sourcebook describes the class of the USS Akagi, Rigel-class, as a heavy scout with a crew of 70. It had 6 decks and was 215 meters in length. The ship had a maximum speed of warp factor 9.2. The ship was armed with type VII phaser emitters, and two torpedo launchers with a normal loadout of 75 photon torpedoes.
