USS Constellation (NCC-1974)edit this page
From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference
The USS Constellation (NCC-1974) was the prototype of the Constellation-class starship.
In 2293, the Constellation was undergoing certification trials. At this time, the vessel had an NX registry number prefix. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
In 2371, the Constellation was ordered to Deep Space 9 to transport a Jem'Hadar child to Starfleet for study. (DS9: "The Abandoned")
During the Dominion War in mid-2374, it was assigned to assist the USS Defiant in the search for survivors of the Cardassian attack on the USS Honshu. (DS9: "Waltz")

[edit] Background
The Constellation was not seen in any of its references. Reference to it appeared on the Operation Retrieve chart in The Undiscovered Country, and merely in dialog references in DS9. Therefore, it is possible that the Constellation was a different, newer starship. However, without direct evidence, this article assumes that it was the same starship.
The first edition of the Star Trek Encyclopedia has a black-and-white drawing of this starship. It conjectures that this vessel was named in honor of the USS Constellation.
An unseen element from the Operation Retrieve charts includes a list of starships, their registries and their commanders. According to this list, the 'Constellation was commanded by G. Cantemessa; named after that film's sound producer Gene S. Cantamessa. [1]
