Admiral Maxwell Forrest gave the post to Archer, although Captain Gardner was originally considered the most suitable choice by Ambassador Soval. (ENT: "First Flight", "Shadows of P'Jem")

• Travis Mayweather's father sends a letter to Archer strongly recommending his son for the helmsman position on the Enterprise. (ENT: "Horizon")
