Canopus (also known as Alpha Carinae) is a star (spectral class: F0 IA) located in or near Federation space, some 310 light years from Sol. (TNG: "Conspiracy") It is the primary of the Canopus system.

On stardate 3046, USS Enterprise helmsman Hikaru Sulu used Canopus as a reference point to plot the location of the Enterprise after it was flung five hundred parsecs by the Metrons. (TOS: "Arena") Its second planet was scheduled to be explored by a scientific survey team in 2268. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer")

As Alpha Carinae, this star was mentioned as a small note on a very large star chart graphic created for TNG: "Conspiracy". It was the image behind the chair in the room where Dexter Remmick was killed. It appears to be located within an outlined block, which may indicate that it was surrounded or was even a part of Federation territory at the time. Oddly enough, the planet Canopus III was also listed, but was located several blocks away from the sun it supposedly orbits.
