Reginald Barclay created a holoprogram where he could escape from his timid and hesitant personality. He was nervous and lacking in confidence and did not fit in with the rest of the crew. This program provided Barclay with a chance to turn the tables on those who he thought were difficult with him. He used the real names of the crew in his character representations.
