Beta radiation
From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference
Beta radiation is the radiation that occurs when an electron is emitted from the nucleus of a radioactive atom. It can be caused by nuclear fission, such as that which results from the detonation of an atomic bomb.
While in 1947 Earth, Rom speculated that the reason his, Quark's and Nog's universal translators weren't working was a solar flare or ionic interference. He also guessed it might be beta radiation, although he noted that it was only caused by nuclear fission. Quark told him not to be an idiot, but Nog told them 20th century Humans used crude nuclear reactors as weapons and blew them up all the time.
Later, Rom thought they could use the beta radiation to cause a cascade reaction with Quark's kemacite to bring the Ferengi and Odo back to their rightful time. However, they had to time their departure and activation of the warp engine aboard Quark's Treasure to coincide with the detonation of an atomic bomb. (DS9: "Little Green Men")
