[edit] Background
It appears that the "Captain Proton" novelization may have been based on the early 1940s science fiction series Captain Video and His Video Rangers, with some cosmetic changes. The series shared the same campy themes and post World War II/Cold War clichés. A robot also existed in that series by the name of Tobor.
The costume worn by Captain Proton bears striking similarity to that of Commando Cody, especially the control panel on the front.
The Captain Proton simulations establish that the Voyager holodeck apparently has the ability to fade the colors of anything and anybody inside, making them appear "black and white".
