Cochrane Equation

From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference

The Cochrane Equation is a fundamental mathematical relationship which dictates how much subspace distortion is necessary to create a stable warp field. It was named after Zefram Cochrane, who conceived the equation when writing warp theory.

The Cochrane Equation was non-constant in the Delphic Expanse. This was due to the presence of a sufficient gravimetric energy emitted by the Delphic Expanse spheres. As a result, the NX-01 Enterprise had difficulty creating a stable warp field while traversing the expanse. (ENT: "Anomaly")
