The cove palm is a plant native to Ogus II. Its fruit contains a parasite, which is highly infectious and life-threatening when eaten.

In 2367, nine-year-old Willie Potts unknowingly ate a cove palm fruit after falling for a practical joke played on him by his brother Jake. The USS Enterprise-D was forced to head for Starbase 416 to seek emergency medical treatment. (TNG: "Brothers")
