The DY-500 class was the designation for an Earth starship class that was in service during the early 22nd century.
This class of vessel utilized Yoyodyne pulse fusion drive types and were considerably more advanced than the much older DY-100-class. (TNG: "Up The Long Ladder"; TOS: "Space Seed")
At least three sub-classes of this design were in service during the 2120s:
- The DY-500 subclass: The SS Mariposa was of this sub-class.
- The DY-500-B subclass: The SS Hokule'a was of this sub-class.
- The DY-500-C subclass: The HMS Lord Nelson was of this sub-class.

Star Trek Maps states that the Woden was a DY-500 class ship. Side view of the ships hull is labeled SS Woden DY-504.
Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology depicts two 21st century spaceship versions of the DY-500 class ships. They are also called the Wheeler class. Described as an extensive upgrade to the DY-100 series. They are both similar to the canon 22nd century version. These older Sub Light Explorer ships were in use from 2019 to 2055. Powered by advanced fission.
The novel Prime Directive states that the main hulls of DY-500s were surplus submarine shells reconfigured to transport cryogenic cargo in space.
