The elk (Alces alces) is a grazing mammal native to Earth.

When the Doctor entered the Beowulf holodeck program in 2372, elk meat was served in Hrothgar's hall. Hrothgar said that elk had once been plentiful in his woods, but had since become rare. (VOY: "Heroes and Demons")

The animal called an elk in Europe (where Beowulf is set) is known as the moose in North America.
