Exanogen gas is an extremely low-temperature compound that can be used as an effective means of containing or slowing the progress of certain types of metal parasites.

In 2368 Data suggested an exanogen gas barrier as a method to contain the advance of a nitrium parasite that had infected the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Cost of Living")
