Originating as science fiction folk singing, "filking" now refers to almost any type of song that refers back to science fiction of some kind, of which a great deal are written about the various Trek series.

Prevalent in the area of Sacramento, California, theme bands are those which not only sing rock songs about Trek, but also dress in the style of Trek as well. (Trekkies 2)
