A futures contract was a contract, traded on a futures exchange (such as the Ferengi Futures Exchange), to buy or sell a certain commodity at a certain date in the future at a specified price.
In 2373, Quark's investments in antimonium options, quadrotriticale futures and powdered newt supplements were wiped out, leaving him "up to his lobes in debt." (DS9: "Business as Usual")
