Hives, also known as urticaria, was a skin condition, which was usually caused by an allergic reaction.
When Tom Paris was a Cadet at Starfleet Academy, he dated a woman named Susie Crabtree. She later ended the relationship. Afterwards, Paris broke out in hives and walked around in a daze for the rest of the year. (VOY: "Lifesigns")
