Igneous rock is rock that is formed quickly by the solidification of lava from erupting volcanoes or other significant geological events. [edit] Types
There are many types of igneous rock, but by far the most common (At least on Earth) are:
- Obsidian, a form of dark, smooth, reflective natural glass. Native Americans and other cultures would carve knives and weapons from this kind.
- Pumice, a porous, grayish rock with a texture akin to sandpaper. Will float in water, and was used for centuries on Earth to scrub feet.
- Granite, a speckled, hard rock used by many cultures for artwork, and notably used on Earth to make counter tops.
- Basalt, a fine-grained, gray to black rock formed by rapid cooling of lava at the surface of a planet. Used in tile.
