J.P. Hanson

Admiral J.P. Hanson was a Starfleet flag officer during the latter half of the 24th century. He was on good terms with Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who referred to him as 'J.P.' when the two of them were alone together; apparently, Hanson promised himself that he would get to know Picard after witnessing the younger man become the first freshman to win the Starfleet Academy marathon, and Hanson subsequently came to regard Picard as possessing more courage and dedication than anyone he ever knew.
In 2366, his ship rendezvoused with the USS Enterprise-D following the destruction of the Federation outpost on Jouret IV. He offered Commander Will Riker command of the USS Melbourne. Riker turned down the offer, preferring to remain aboard the Enterprise.
When it was revealed that the Borg were responsible for the loss of the outpost in the Jouret system, Hanson returned to his ship. Learning of Picard's transformation into Locutus, he informed Shelby never to say that Picard was 'assisting' the Borg, and made the decision to regard Picard as a casualty of war. He led the Federation fleet against the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359, where he died, as his command ship was destroyed by the invading Borg cube. The script called for Hanson to appear on a Galaxy-class bridge, the Galaxy-class battle bridge set was used instead during filming. Hanson was also mentioned by Benjamin Sisko in the DS9 pilot, but the scene was deleted.

In the Marvel Comics Voyager comic book "Ghosts", Tom Paris claims Hanson was "like an uncle" to him.
