James was a Starfleet officer aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk. In 2266, James served on the bridge following a transporter accident, that divided Captain Kirk into two opposite personalities. During a confrontation on the bridge, in a fit of rage, the 'evil' Kirk ordered James and Farrell to apprehend the 'good' Kirk. (TOS: "The Enemy Within")

Although named as being among the bridge crew, James was not specified among the characters. At the time there were three unnamed characters that may have been James, these individuals include: the communications officer, the helmsman, and the crewman at the engineering station.
