James Contner is a prolific television director who has directed five episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. He has also directed episodes of 21 Jump Street, Miami Vice, seaQuest DSV, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The X-Files, Hercules, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Angel, Smallville, The Dead Zone (starring Nicole deBoer), and Firefly.

Contner also worked as a cinematographer for both television and film during the 1980s. Among the movies he worked on this capacity were Crusing (1980), Nighthawks (1981), Jaws 3-D (1983), The Flamingo Kid (1984), The Last Dragon (1985), and Monkey Shines (1988). He also earned an Emmy Award nomination for his work as cinematographer on the Crime Story episode "Top of the World".
