Kaplan was a Starfleet crewman assigned to the Federation starship USS Enterprise-E during the early 2370s.

In 2373, Kaplan was addressed by Dr. Crusher to start modifying weapons, after Captain Picard ordered Worf off the bridge. (Star Trek: First Contact)
