Karen Loews, M.D., was a Starfleet psychiatrist with the rank of lieutenant. She was the legal guardian of Sarina Douglas.
In 2374, Doctor Loews was responsible for the care of a number of patients who had undergone a procedure called accelerated critical neural pathway formation. This procedure had left Loews' patients with extremely advanced mental abilities, but severe problems in fitting in to normal society.
In 2374, after the revelation that Julian Bashir had also undergone the procedure but had managed to maintain a normal life, Loews took four of her patients - Jack, Lauren, Patrick and Sarina - to Deep Space 9 in the hopes that Bashir could show them that it was possible to function in normal society. (DS9: "Statistical Probabilities")
A year later, she gave her consent for Doctor Bashir to attempt a procedure to stimulate the growth of new synapses in Sarina's thalamus. (DS9: "Chrysalis")
- Karen Loews was played by Jeannetta Arnette. Although it was mentioned that she was stationed at a Federation Institute, the name of said institute was never established.
