"HMS Bounty"
Class: Klingon Bird-of-Prey
Affiliation: Klingon Empire / Federation
Status: Unknown (2286)

HMS Bounty was the name given to the Klingon Bird-of-Prey commandeered by James T. Kirk in 2285. It was given the moniker by Leonard McCoy in a fit of historical irony, as the original Bounty, an Earth seagoing ship, had been taken over by mutineers - a situation similar to that the former USS Enterprise crewmembers found themselves in. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

After seizing control of the vessel from Klingon Commander Kruge above the Genesis Planet, Kirk took the Bounty to Vulcan in order to take Spock to Mount Seleya for the fal-tor-pan ritual. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)

The Bounty remained on Vulcan for three months into 2286, before Kirk and his crew chose to return to Earth to face court martial for their actions. However, the arrival of the Whale Probe forced Kirk to take the Bounty back in time to 1986 to recover two humpback whales. Upon returning to the 23rd century, the Bounty was crippled by the probe, and crashed into San Francisco Bay. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

[edit] Background

  • In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the design of the bridge aboard the Bounty was completely redressed from the vessel's original appearance in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. This appearance would act as a reference for all future bridges aboard Klingon ships.
