Medicine bundle
From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference
A medicine bundle is a bag or blanket filled with a few, very personal items, used in various Native American rituals.
[edit] Chakotay's medicine bundle
Chakotay's medicine bundle contained a blackbird's wing, a CHAH-mooz-ee river stone, and an akoonah, wrapped in animal skins. (VOY: "The Cloud", "Initiations", "Tattoo")
In 2371, he used it to help Captain Janeway find and contact her animal guide. (VOY: "The Cloud")
In 2372, Chakotay used his medicine bundle in performing the pakra, to honor the anniversary of his father's death. His medicine bundle was lost during an encounter with the Kazon-Ogla, and he was required to replicate a replacement in order to finish the ritual. (VOY: "Initiations")
[edit] Neelix's medicine bundle
After a near-death experience in 2374, Neelix assembled his own medicine bundle after seeking Chakotay's help in performing a vision quest. Neelix's bundle consisted of a necklace that belonged to his sister Alixia, a flower from Kes' garden, and a model of the Guiding Tree. (VOY: "Mortal Coil")
[edit] Apocrypha
In the non-canon The Hologram's Handbook by Robert Picardo, he tells the story of The Doctor creating his own medicine bundle with Chakotay's guidance.
