Memory Alpha:MediaWiki 1.3
From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference
Welcome to MediaWiki 1.3, the latest version of the wiki software that powers Memory Alpha! If you're reading this, you're most likely wondering what the heck is going on, or maybe just what's supposed to be so great about this new version. Read on to learn more about the new features!

[edit] New skin
The new default skin for Memory Alpha is a modified version of the "Monobook" skin used by Wikipedia and its sister sites. Although we're still working out some bugs in the functionality of the style sheet, the appearance has basically been finalized.
Users now have the ability to customize the appearance of Memory Alpha by creating user-specific style sheets.
If you have any comments or questions about the new appearance, please post them on MediaWiki talk:Monobook.css.
[edit] Templates
Templates now reside in their own namespace, which is called "Template:" (naturally!). This separates the custom interface text in the MediaWiki: namespace from the custom includes which are designed for the Template: namespace.
Also, the wiki markup for including templates has changed. Instead of {{msg:template}}, you now use just plain {{template}} (without the "msg:"). See Help:Template for more info.
[edit] Edit conflict merging
MediaWiki 1.3 includes the diff3 difference engine, which will merge conflicting edits on the fly rather than forcing an edit conflict warning. This will be especially useful for high-traffic pages like Ten Forward and votes for deletion.
[edit] Other changes
- All help documents are in the process of being moved to the new Help: namespace.
- RSS and Atom syndicated feeds are available for many of the special pages, including Special:Newpages and Special:Recentchanges.
- Pre-filled edit summaries will be displayed in grey text, rather than bracketed with "=" signs.
- Links in edit summaries are now displayed as such rather than with brackets.
- Links and other formatting inside image syntax (for image descriptions) is now permitted.
- New image option: "framed", which will not scale the image down to a thumbnail, but will still frame it inside a description box. The image can be floated right or left.
- Real names. Users can (optionally) specify their real name they want to use for author credits.
- Page protection and unprotection now requires confirmation.
- New magic words added: {{NAMESPACE}} and {{PAGENAME}}
