A midwife is a professional who provides prenatal care to expecting mothers, attends the birth, and provides postpartum care to the mother and infant. Midwives specialize in low-risk pregnancies, helping women to have healthy pregnancies and natural births - the non-medical equivalent of an obstetrician, who specializes in surgical aspects of pregnancy.
In 2367, Worf acted as midwife when Keiko O'Brien went into labor in Ten Forward on the Enterprise-D after the ships systems were disabled by a quantum filament. (TNG: "Disaster")
