[edit] The first Shuttlecraft Copernicus

Harry Mudd stealing the first shuttlecraft 12

When the Enterprise was studying a Class M planet orbitting a binary sun, Harry Mudd hijacked the Shuttlecraft 12 with Nurse Christine Chapel as a hostage. He planned to ditch her on the landing site and get as far away as possible on the planet surface. Unfortunately for him, and for the shuttle, a native rock creature crushed the vehicle with its foot. (TAS: "Mudd's Passion")

[edit] The second Shuttlecraft Copernicus

The second shuttlecraft Copernicus

Later in 2269, the Enterprise had a replacement shuttle of different design. It was used by Spock, Sulu and Uhura to transfer a Slaver stasis box, discovered on the planet Kzin to Starbase 25.

En route, they detected a second Slaver stasis box in Beta Lyrae. Upon setting down on an ice bound planet in the Beta Lyrae system, they were taken hostage by the Kzinti. The Kzinti, who possessed an empty stasis box, had used it to lure the Copernicus to Beta Lyrae to steal the first stasis box. (TAS: "The Slaver Weapon")

[edit] Background

The shuttlecraft were named after the 16th century astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.

The NCC-17014 and another shuttle in the Enterprise's shuttlebay was of the same design as the first shuttle 12. At least the second shuttle 12 seemed to have warp capability. There was no name printed on the hull of either shuttles, but both had the same registry number, although the first shuttle was labelled N.C.C.170112 or N.C.C.-170112 in some scenes. Both ships were probably named Copernicus, even though the first was only referred to as "shuttlecraft" in the episode dialogue.
