A navy was the branch military forces principally designated for lake- or ocean-borne combat operations and related functions. Many traditions that originated in the early Earth-based navies were still adhered to by Starfleet in the 23rd century.
- The Starfleet rank structure was the same as that used by the navy of the 20th century United States.
