The ophidian was a snake-like lifeform native to Devidia II, with the ability to focus triolic waves.

In 2368, a group of Devidians harnessed one and used it to open portals to the 19th century, in the city of San Francisco during a cholera epidemic, where they were harvesting Human neural energy for sustenance. The ophidian was disguised as a snake-headed cane, and could be activated by a precisely calibrated phaser blast. (TNG: "Time's Arrow, Part II")

"Ophidian" is an alternate term for a snake.
