Playmates Toys

Playmates Toys is a toy manufacturer that produced a number of lines of Star Trek action figures, vehicles and accessories in the mid to late 1990s. In the UK and Europe, these products were distributed by Bandai.

[edit] History

The line was launched in fall 1992 with a series of action figures based on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Nearly the entire USS Enterprise-D crew was represented, plus Gowron, a Ferengi, a Borg, and a Romulan. Roleplaying items included a type 2 phaser and communicator, while a shuttlecraft was produced for the figures, all with lights and sounds. A model of the Enterprise-D was also released. The line was quite successful, and another wave of TNG figures, accessories, and vehicles was produced in fall 1993 along with a special boxed set of all seven original series crewmembers.

Deep Space Nine debuted in 1994, followed by more TNG characters plus a line for the feature film Star Trek Generations. Voyager figures arrived in 1995, as did more TOS, TNG, and DS9 items. By 1996, the separate lines were all consolidated under a single "Star Trek" banner (with the exception of releases based on Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection).

However, the license began to decline by 1998. Some collectors believed that promotional stunts by Playmates, such as intentionally producing some figures in lower amounts, and a shift in emphasis from the smaller 4.5-inch figures to larger doll-like 9- and 12-inch figures hurt the brand. By 1999, the number of items produced by Playmates mostly dwindled to limited releases offered exclusively through certain retailers. On 17 September 1999, the Star Trek line was formally canceled.

Ezri Dax was the only main cast member from the four series in existence during the Playmates license not to receive an action figure from the company. Diamond Select Toys released an Ezri figure in late 2007.

The Star Trek: Voyager production staff used parts of Borg action figures to create the pile of Borg corpses as seen in VOY: "Scorpion".

In January 2008, it was reported that Playmates would be creating a toy line for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. [1]

[edit] 1992 releases

[edit] Star Trek: The Next Generation, 4.5 inch figures, Assortment No. 6010

  • Releases in Germany eschewed the standard blister pack used in the United States and elsewhere in Europe in favor of an enclosed box.
Character Uniform/Costume Stock No. Accessories Variants/Notes
Captain Jean-Luc Picard Captain's jacket 6011
Lt. Commander Data Starfleet duty uniform 6012 Featured opening access panels on back and arm
Lieutenant Worf Starfleet duty uniform 6013
Commander William Riker Battle-damaged Starfleet duty uniform 6014
  • type-2 phaser
  • tricorder
  • field kit
  • directional UV source

Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge Starfleet duty uniform 6015 The first release of the figure came with a removable VISOR, identified by an image of La Forge without his VISOR on the blister pack. This was considered a choking hazard, and so was replaced with an integrated VISOR. The removable variant is now extremely rare.
Lt. Commander Deanna Troi Lavender jumpsuit 6016
  • PADD
  • Personal access terminal
  • Tricorder
  • portable computer gear
The blister pack refers to Troi by her Starfleet rank, rather than her position of Counselor.
Romulan   6051
Ferengi   6052
  • energy whip
  • hand blaster
  • Ferengi rifle
  • dilithium crystals
A rare variant had non-black boots (presumably a painting error), and had a reversed image on the blister pack.
Gowron the Klingon   6053 This figure came with varying colors of trim on its uniform.
Borg   6055
  • mechanical manipulation arm
  • bionic plasmic laser and cutting ray arm
  • shield generation coils
A printing error resulted in a rare variant with a reversed image on the blister pack.

[edit] Role-playing, Ships, Playsets and Accessories

Product Stock No. Accessories Sound/Light Variants/Notes
Shuttlecraft Goddard 6101 Cargo pallet
  • Phaser, impulse engine sounds
  • Light-up nacelles
Shuttlecraft contained one pilot seat and fold-down benches seating four, capable of holding a total of five figures.
USS Enterprise-D 6102
  • Warp drive, impulse engine, phaser, photon torpedo sounds
  • Light-up nacelles
One of the main complaints about early Playmates vessels was their lack of a display stand. In particular, because this product had a center of gravity in the saucer section, it 'listed' forward on a shelf. A re-release in 1994 included a new display stand.
Communicator Walkie-Talkies 6119   None Clip-on communicator speaker/microphones, attached to a belt-mounted transmitter. Claimed range of 170 feet.
Type-2 Phaser 6151
  • Stun, disrupt sounds
  • Light-up beam emitter
Attached via belt clip
Personal Communicator 6152
  • Communicator beep
  • Light-up delta symbol
Attached to clothing via a buttonhole
Tricorder 6153
  • Three scanning mode sounds
  • Light-up data indicators, illuminated screen
Screen illumination could be disabled via a switch in the battery compartment. Attached via belt clip.

A limited edition released as part of a four-figure pack from the JCPenny catalog, which included #6035, #6942 and #6943; as well as a limited single release in Canada. The package claimed to represent "Redemption Data", but Data did not wear the command division uniform in that episode. He would wear it under Jellico's command in "Chain of Command, Part II".

Only 7,000 units were made for the US and Canada. With no international release, this is considered to be one of the most difficult Playmates releases to obtain.

[edit] Star Trek Generations, 4.5 inch figures, Asst. No. 6910

The Generations releases featured the original costume designs made for the movie. These designs were scrapped shortly before filming on the movie began, but the action figures were already in production at the time. Figures wearing the correct uniforms would see release over the following years.

Character Uniform/Costume Stock No. Accessories Variants/Notes
