Class: Moon
Location: Beta Quadrant
Affiliation: Klingon Empire

Praxis was a Klingon moon. It was a key energy-production facility for the Klingon Empire until 2293.

The remains of Praxis following the explosion

That year, a combination of mishaps occurred causing an explosion that disintegrated most of the moon - the disaster was later attributed to "overmining and insufficient safety precautions."

A subspace shock wave from the incident radiated quickly from the destroyed moon and disrupted operations aboard starships, including a Starfleet ship, the USS Excelsior. The result of that explosion severely damaged the ozone layer of Qo'noS, leaving it with approximately 50 Earth standard years of oxygen left. With the Klingon Empire's economy and infrastructure in tatters due to continually high military expenditures, peace negotiations were quickly established with the Federation that same year. This tenuous peace anticipated the later alliance between the Federation and Klingon Empire. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; VOY: "Flashback")

It was never revealed, in later productions, how the Klingon homeworld managed to recover from this incident.

[edit] Apocrypha

In the Star Trek: Myriad Universes story The Chimes at Midnight, set in an alternate timeline (specifically, the one from TAS: "Yesteryear" in which Spock died as a child), Praxis is chosen by Thelin in 2290 as the test site for the Genesis Device (which in this timeline had led to full-scare war) both as a demonsrtation of force and because, with nearly all of its inhabitants living in areas either underground or shielded, there would be little or no loss of life. The action forces the Klingon surrender - unfortunately, the Genesis Wave overwhelms most shields and reaches below the ground, and of the population of half a million, on 2,000 survive. However, during peace negotiations, it is discovered the Genesis actually saved the moon, as the explosion which occurred in the prime universe had been inevitable within a year before the wave had strengthened the planet and put an end to the mining that would eventually destroy it.
