Aboard Federation starships, a records officer is responsible for compiling and managing information regarding a ship's mission and assignments.

Lieutenant Commander Ben Finney was the records officer aboard the USS Enterprise. In 2267, Finney had been gathering information on an ion storm inside an ion pod. When the Enterprise went to red alert status, the pod had to be ejected and Finney was presumed killed. (TOS: "Court Martial")
