Robert Swarthe was part of the special animation effects team for the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture, garnering the team an Academy Award nomination. His work on the film helped win the team the Saturn Award for "Best Special Effects." He also served a similar function, as the visual effects and animation supervisor, in the science fiction film Close Encounters of the Third Kind (starring Teri Garr).
