Multiple realities
(covers information from several alternate timelines)

Lieutenant Robert Tomlinson was a male Human Starfleet officer who lived during the mid-23rd century. He served in the command division aboard the USS Enterprise during the mid-2260s under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. He was one of the ship's phaser specialists and was assigned to the forward phaser control room.

In 2266, Tomlinson was engaged to be married to Angela Martine, a fellow Enterprise crewmember. The wedding ceremony was interrupted, however, when the Enterprise went to condition red upon news of a Romulan Bird-of-Prey attacking Outpost 4, necessitating all crewmembers reporting to battle stations.

Later, Tomlinson was left as the only crewmember in the phaser room, when all others assigned there were injured due to radiation burns, although he was later supplemented by Lieutenant Stiles.

As Tomlinson and Stiles were working at the controls, a phaser coolant leak incapacitated both of them in the midst of another Romulan attack. Although Lieutenant Commander Spock was able to pull them both from the phaser room, Tomlinson succumbed to his injuries and died, the only Enterprise casualty of the conflict. (TOS: "Balance of Terror")

In an alternate 2266, created after Christopher Pike prevented the death of several Starfleet cadets and his own exposure to delta radiation, Tomlinson's marriage with Martine was still interrupted by the Romulan incursion. In this timeline, it was Martine that was killed during the incident, while Tomlinson survived to mourn her in sickbay. (SNW: "A Quality of Mercy")
