The original Romulan battle cruiser was the replacement model of the Romulan Star Empire for their Bird-of-Prey. The usage of the term would continue to be used by the Federation to describe an otherwise unknown class of Romulan starship during the 2360s.

In 2364, a contingent of seven Romulan battle cruisers converged on a Federation border outpost. Despite the outpost calling for reinforcements from the nearby USS Berlin, and USS Enterprise-D, the encounter ended without incident. (TNG: "Angel One")

The definition of the term "Romulan battle cruiser" in Star Trek: The Next Generation is unclear. It may be in reference to the Romulan Warbird, as Riker referred to the D'deridex-class, IRW Haakona, as a "Romulan battle cruiser", however, Riker also referred to their weaponry as "phasers" and "photon torpedoes"; a reference that is dubious, at best.
