Active: 24th century

The Romulan science vessel was a class of Romulan science vessel in service during the mid-24th century, which was used to conduct standard and experimental research for the Romulan Star Empire, and notably by the Romulan Astrophysical Academy.

In early-2350, the science vessel Talvath, operating under the direction of the Dr. Telek R'Mor began an extended three-year scientific mission. The following year, the Talvath encountered a micro-wormhole in Sector 1385 of the Alpha Quadrant. It was here that its crew discovered the USS Voyager, which was located in the Delta Quadrant, however, twenty-years in the future. (VOY: "Eye of the Needle")

In 2368, a science vessel tested an experimental interphase cloaking device. During the test, it experienced a forced chamber explosion in the resonator coil. One member of its crew, Parem, was phased out of reality by the device and all but seventy three of the crew were still alive.

The ship was assisted and repaired by the USS Enterprise-D, who offered the science vessel a modified Federation subspace resonator to act as a new graviton generator, which limited the ship to warp two during its returned to Romulan space. They also received a Federation computer from the 2220s or 2230s. (TNG: "The Next Phase")

The Star Trek Customizable Card Game gives its name as Apnex.

[edit] Background

The Romulan science vessel studio model was a redress of the Romulan scoutship that appeared in "The Defector". It would later be redressed to appear as a the Nerada in VOY: "Favorite Son"

According to the script, it was "about half the size of the Enterprise." This indicated that the length of the vessel is around 300 meters, however, based on the scale of the previous model used, it appeared to be around 95 meters.

Also, according to the script, the engine room of the science vessel "is smaller than engineering on the Enterprise and should reflect very different ideas about engineering design and philosophy than those we are familiar with. Their engine core is a spherical device contained within a small chamber which has a single open hatch."
