Sand bats are an animal indigenous to Manark IV, which have the curious evolutionary property of appearing as inanimate rock crystals, until the attack on their prey. It is unknown whether tricorder readings can tell their true identity when in crystal form, or if it is purely visual. (TOS: "The Empath")
