A scholarship is an award given to individuals based on academics, skills and various qualifications.
On pre-warp Earth, scholarships were sometimes available to gifted students who were unable to pay for their education otherwise. In 1957, Jack received such scholarship. (ENT: "Carbon Creek")
On Trill, Symbiont host candidates can receive scholarships to increase their eligibility to be selected as a host for a symbiont. (DS9: "Dax")
