The sternum is a bone located at the front of the Human chest that is connected to the ribs.
When Jono attacked the sleeping Jean-Luc Picard with a Klingon d'k tahg, the blade hit Picard's sternum and was deflected, causing no serious wounds. (TNG: "Suddenly Human")
