Byron Haskin is a legendary in figure in science fiction film making. Not only was he associated with the first pilot, he also directed a number of episodes for another landmark sci-fi series, The Outer Limits. Not to be forgotten is the work he did with George Pal on The War of the Worlds and Conquest of Space.
