I believe state means nation in this case, so the Central Protectorate is not a sub-national entity. It had a war with a neighbor, and it has its own military. --Bp 20:32, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

• I interpreted it based on the description the author wrote it as (ie: the State of Michigan). However, it appears that nation-state (ie: Canada) would have been the more appropriate per Category:Nation-states. --Alan del Beccio 21:21, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
