[edit] Name origin

Are we sure it was named after a battleship? It was also the name of a famous Samurai, Miyamoto Musashi. That actually could be the origin of the WW2 battleship name. Siyavash 00:35, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

The Yamato-class superbattleships (and the carrier Shinano, which was originally going to be the third of the Yamato-class ships before being repurposed halfway through her construction) were named after ancient provinces of Japan, as were all Japanese battleships of the period (in much the same way as all US battleships have been named after states). Musashi refers to the province of Musashi (today parts of Saitama and Kanagawa Prefectures), from whence Miyamoto Musashi reputedly came, but not the swordsman directly. 216.52.210.36 23:56, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
