Class: Cheyenne
Registry: NCC-71620
Affiliation: Federation/Starfleet
Status: Active (2368)

The USS Ahwahnee (NCC-71620) was a Cheyenne-class Federation starship that was in service during the mid-24th century.

The Ahwahnee was left adrift and decimated by the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359 on stardate 44002. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II")

In early 2368, the Ahwahnee joined Captain Picard's task force that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. It was positioned near the lower rear of the tachyon detection grid. (TNG: "Redemption II")

[edit] Background

Ahwahnee is the name given by the Miwok tribe to the Yosemite valley. In English, Awahnee is translated as, "valley that looks like a gaping mouth."

The Ahwahnee registry number was visible on two different computer displays in "Redemption II", aboard the USS Enterprise-D and USS Sutherland, where it was given the registry NCC-71620. The registry NCC-73620, which is also associated with this vessel, was not visible on screen, but could be clearly read off photos of the filming model.

The aforementioned Ahwahnee studio model, whose name so described by Ed Miarecki [1], was a four nacelled starship built from two scaled-down Galaxy-class model kit saucers, with marker pens glued on as engine nacelles. The model was then painted and damaged before being filmed for "The Best of Both Worlds".
