"...a three hour tour, a three hour tour." - ship's motto

The USS Brattain (NCC-21166) was a Miranda-class science vessel, constructed by the Yoyodyne Division at 40 Eridani A Starfleet Construction Yards and commissioned on stardate 22519.5.

During the mid-2360s the Brattain had a crew complement of thirty-five, among which included Captain Chantal Zaheva, her first officer Commander Brink and Betazoid science advisor, Andrus Hagan.

In mid-2367, the Brattain mysteriously disappeared. It was re-discovered by the USS Enterprise-D, on stardate 44631.2, following a distress call sent twenty-nine days earlier.

The ship was found to be trapped in a Tyken's Rift near an uncharted binary star system. An investigation discovered all but one of the ship's crew died under circumstances of violent suicides and homicides, determined to be caused by severe REM deprivation.

When last seen, the Brattain was still trapped within the Rift. (TNG: "Night Terrors")

[edit] Background

The Brattain was named for Walter Brattain, the co-inventor of the transistor. The name on the model was incorrectly spelled "Brittain" on the ship's hull. The commissioning data and motto are derived from the ship's dedication plaque. The data and motto are in-jokes referencing the ill-fated voyage that began the TV show Gilligan's Island.

The Brattain was a reuse of the USS Reliant model from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
