USS Emden

The USS Emden (NCC-1856) was a Federation starship in service in the late 23rd century.
In 2293, the Emden was assigned to patrol the Neutral Zone. She was selected as additional support, along with the USS Ahwahnee and the USS Endeavour, for the military operation code-named Operation Retrieve. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

The Emden was either named for the city in northern Germany or the early 20th century German cruiser.
According to a ship list included in the plans, and not seen in the extended cut of the movie, the Emden was commanded by C. Thomas, and the ship was located in Sector 21803.
The ship's captain was named after the first movie's photographic effects editor Robert C. Thomas.(citation needed • edit)
While not an official source, Decipher roleplaying game supplements state that this vessel may be a Ranger-class starship.
