Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Countless different spoken, written, and gestural languages are used by different cultures throughout space. Generally, the universal translator is able to surmount the language barrier between different groups, allowing interstellar society to exist. It is not always successful, however. Those who work in the field of linguistics are known as linguists, those with a specialization in languages from other than their homeworld are known as exo-linguists.

In addition to facilitating communications between individuals and species, linguistics has other important applications. Voice recognition and synthesis software for computer systems all rely upon linguistic knowledge. Voiceprint analysis and related technologies are similarly rooted in linguistics.
