[edit] Theory on the Borg

A fascinating phonomenon that is seldom discussed is the explanation for visible behavioral and morphological differences among the Borg. The most prominent example is the change between TNG and Star Trek: First Contact. There are also 2 more types seen in ENT: "Regeneration".

Of course, the real world explanation is that the Borg makeup changed because the producers wanted that for First Contact. However, an in-universe explanation can be given while at the same time enriching it. Below is my theory.

There are 4 Borg subtypes.

  • Subtype 1 is the Borg seen in TNG.
  • Subtype 2 is the Borg seen in First Contact and Voyager, and are far more agressive than Subtype 1. They also have assimilation tubules.
  • Subtypes 3 and 4 appeared in Regeneration. Subtype 3 is like Subtype 1, except they have assimilation tubules, and are more agressive. Subtype 4 Borg have metal plating on their bodies, and are similar to Subtype 2 in agression

Just as the Borg have specialized medical and tactical drones, they also have over-arching subtypes which perform different functions for the Collective. Different subtypes are more common to different regions, and the subtypes are segregated.

[edit] Subtype 1

An example of Subtype 1

Subtype 1 is the exploratory, or probing subtype of the Borg. It is Subtype 1 that perform reconnaisance functions for the Collective, and discriminate species' worthiness for assimilation.

If a species is worthy for assimilation, Subtype 1 will sometimes attempt to weaken the species by war (TNG: "The Neutral Zone"), or attempt to assimilate the technology of the species (TNG: "Q Who"). After these attempts, Subtype 1 may attempt to assimilate the species (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds").

If the initial assimilation attempt fails, Subtype 1 will ignore the species and continue in its function (TNG: "I Borg", "Descent").

Subtype 1 is common beyond Borg space , since this is where its functions can be executed.

[edit] Subtype 2

Three drones of Subtype 2

Subtype 2 is the subtype which perform primary assimilation of species and maintainence of Borg space. Subtype 2 will attempt to assimilate a species which Subtype 1 has failed with Star Trek: First Contact.

Subtype 2 have assimilation tubules, and is the most aggressive subtype when assimilating species. (Star Trek: First Contact). This subtype is most common in Borg space, and the rest of the Delta Quadrant VOY: "Scorpion". Subtype 2 was first encountered by the Federation in 2373 (Star Trek: First Contact).

[edit] Subtype 3

Subtype 3

Subtype 3's function is unclear, due to it making only one appearance. Subtype 3 have assimilation tubules, but their agressive instincts are more toned down compared to Subtype 2, but are still more agressive than Subtype 1.

It can be speculated that, due to the hybrid nature (Subtypes 1 and 2) of Subtype 3, that they are most common between the area around Borg space and the area of Subtype 1.

[edit] Subtype 4

A Tarkalean drone of Subtype 4

The function of Subtype 4 is unknown, and may not even be a subtype at all. Its behavior is similar to Subtype 2, and only its morphology is different than Subtype 2.

Subtype 4 have metal plating on their bodies, as well as a hybrid caramel/pale skin coloration. It can be speculated that these differences are due to Tarkalean physiology.
