• Portals - Yes or no?
• Make "Template:DidYouKnow/archive" a project page in "Memory Alpha:" namespace, to be used like the reference to Memory Alpha:Featured articles.
• Make an archive page for "old news".
• Guidelines for content length of templates for news, featured article and DYKs.

It's been a few weeks since this was suggested... I really like the new layout and agree that the main page desperately needs a rehab. I'd support this redesign completely. The portals would make it a lot easier to navigate and browse, and hopefully a bot and some guidelines on templates will keep the main page content fresh. -- SmokeDetector47^{( TALK )} 23:39, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

What the heck are portals? :P Um, anyways, I, too, support the new layout (assuming we can get a calender template made) as well as the above suggestions. I think the length for the news templates should be limited to three to five stories at a time. As for the featured article template, I think about 3 or 4 paragraphs is what we've been doing in the past and that seems to be working out, and I think the DYKs should probably be limited to 5. Portals basically are "main pages" for specific subtopics. On my suggestion, I defined 5 of these subtopics, it's the first line of red links. For example, Portal:Around the Universe could list links to those articles that now are part of the "Around the Universe" section of the encyclopedia on the main page (Stellar Cartography, ...). It could additionally have it's own featured article (perhaps one per month), and/or an "image of the week", and/or specific subsets of articles "to be written" and so on. If the topic of a portal warrants it (and someone is willing to take care of it), that portal could in turn even have further sub-portals. Ah, sorry Cid. I was working on a calendar template for the main page, trying to make it work by passing parameters rather than needing one for each day. I may not be able to get that to work, though. -- Renegade54 01:42, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
